This is one of those sandwiches that never really goes out of style. It’s simple, it’s filling, and it comes together with things you probably already have in your kitchen.

A tuna melt isn’t anything fancy, but when it’s done right—with crispy, buttery bread and melted cheese—it’s hard to beat.
You can make it with canned tuna for convenience or use fresh cooked tuna if you have it on hand.
Either way, it comes together fast and is perfect for lunch, a simple dinner, or even an after-school meal for kids.
And because it’s soft on the inside with a crisp outside, it’s easy for toddlers to eat and usually goes over well with picky eaters too.
Ingredients
- 2 cans tuna (5 oz each), drained
You can also use about 1–1½ cups cooked fresh tuna, flaked. - 3 tablespoons mayonnaise
Adds creaminess—adjust based on how moist you like it. - 1 teaspoon mustard (optional)
Gives a slight tang without overpowering. - 1/4 cup celery, finely chopped
Adds a light crunch. - 2 tablespoons onion, finely chopped
Keeps the flavor mild for kids—use less if needed. - Salt and black pepper, to taste
- 4 slices bread
(white, sourdough, or whole wheat all work) - 4 slices cheese
(cheddar, American, or mozzarella melt best) - 2 tablespoons butter (for toasting)
Instructions
1- Make the tuna filling
In a medium bowl, add the drained tuna and break it up with a fork until flaky. Stir in mayonnaise, mustard (if using), celery, onion, salt, and pepper. Mix until everything is evenly combined.
2- Prepare the bread
Spread butter on one side of each slice of bread. This helps create that golden, crispy crust.
3- Assemble the sandwiches
Place two slices of bread butter-side down in a pan. Add a slice of cheese, then spoon the tuna mixture evenly on top. Add another slice of cheese over the tuna, then place the second piece of bread on top (butter-side facing up).
4- Cook low and slow
Heat the pan over medium to medium-low heat. Cook for about 3–4 minutes on the first side until golden brown. Flip carefully and cook the other side until the bread is crisp and the cheese is fully melted.
5- Press lightly for even toasting
Use a spatula to gently press the sandwich while it cooks so everything melts together evenly.

6- Serve warm
Remove from the pan, let it sit for a minute, then slice in half. Serve while warm and melty.

Tips, Serving Ideas, Storage & Variations
How to serve
- Serve warm, right off the pan while the cheese is still melty.
- Slice into halves or triangles—easier for kids and toddlers to handle.
- Pair with simple sides like:
- Chips or fries
- A small fruit bowl
- Tomato soup (classic combo)
- A light side salad
- For younger kids, you can cut into small squares or strips for easy eating

Make it kid & toddler-friendly
- Chop celery and onion very fine or leave them out if needed.
- Use mild cheese like American or mozzarella for a smoother taste.
- Keep seasoning simple—salt and a little pepper is enough.

Storage (leftovers)
- Store leftover tuna filling in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
- Keep the filling separate from bread to avoid sogginess.
- Reheat sandwiches in a pan or air fryer to bring back the crisp texture (avoid microwave if possible).
